A complete roof installation on a home in White Plains, New York. The old roof was stripped off, the deck was checked over, and a new GAF system went on from the deck up in Charcoal.
What the job involved
- Full tear-off of the old roof
- The deck checked over, with any soft or damaged sheathing dealt with before the new roof went on
- New GAF underlayment across the whole roof
- GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles in Charcoal
What underlayment actually does
Shingles are the part you can see, but they are not what keeps the water out on their own. Wind drives rain sideways and up under the courses, and in winter ice backs up at the eaves and forces water uphill. The underlayment is the layer that catches all of that.
It is also the layer nobody can inspect once the roof is finished, which is exactly why it is worth caring about. A roof is only as good as what went on before the shingles.
Why we tear off rather than roof over
Laying new shingles straight over old ones is quicker and cheaper on the day. It also hides the deck, so nothing underneath gets checked, and it puts a second layer of weight on a structure that was built for one. Any rot stays where it is and carries on.
Taking the old roof off means the deck gets looked at properly. If something needs replacing, it gets replaced while it is open and cheap to reach.
