A roof installation on a second White Plains home, this one with new copper flashing worked in at the chimney and two skylights fitted while the roof was open.

Roof installation in White Plains NY with GAF shingles in Charcoal, copper chimney flashing and two skylights

What the job involved

  • New GAF underlayment across the full roof
  • GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles in Charcoal
  • Copper flashing at the chimney-to-roof intersections, and flashing to the chimney lining
  • Two skylights installed

Fitting skylights into a new roof

A skylight is a hole cut in a roof. Whether it leaks for the next twenty years comes down entirely to how the opening is framed and how the flashing kit is woven into the courses around it.

Done as part of a roof installation, the skylight is integrated into the roof as it is built, and the shingles run into the flashing the way the manufacturer intends. Retrofitted into a finished roof later, it means cutting back into new work. If skylights are something you have been considering, the time to do it is when the roof is being done anyway.

Where a roof usually starts leaking

It is rarely the open field of shingles. It is the joints: the chimney, the valleys, around vents and skylights, and along the eaves. Those are the places where two different things meet and something has to bridge the gap.

That is why the metalwork matters more than the colour of the shingle. On this roof the chimney joint was flashed in copper, which stays put and keeps its shape long after the cheaper alternatives have given up.
